The club’s establishment is lost in the archives of history with quite a few well respected and accomplished bodyboarders seeming to claim the title of it’s Founder.
However, since it’s inception, it has grown from the die-hard group of Ballina / Lennox bodyboarders to a crew that now encompasses from Ocean Shores, Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Lennox Head, Ballina, Evans Head, Iluka, Yamba and all the surrounding Hinterlands.
At present, the club is being run purely on the basis of lets have fun, meet and perform against each other with a semi-serious attitude. However, just between us, quite a few act as though they’re going for the World Title.
Headlanders, with it’s laid back style has bought back to Bodyboarding the mateship and camaraderie that seems to have disappeared from the sport over the years and caused many riders to stop competing. We cater for Cadets, Juniors, Opens and Dropknee and hopefully one day we can muster a girls division as well.
Thanks to Kaye and Frank at Inverted Byron Bay for resurrecting Headlanders again after a year or 2 break. They sponsor and co-ordinate the running of the comps and provide a central point for which the club can be managed, which has proved to be a very valuable part of the set-up.
Membership is continually growing and as a club, everybody will benefit. In association with Inverted Byron Bay we hosted the 3rd Round of the Queensland Championships in 2007 and will again this year. Who knows, perhaps the Australian Titles could be on the agenda one day soon.
At Headlanders everyone is equal regardless of their ability and no one gets a “get out of jail free” card when they compete. Whether you’re in red / white / yellow or blue – “who are ya?”. You’re no-one until you nail that wave with a smooth, slick move and we can all pat you on the back because we appreciate good bodyboarding when we see it, not when we just hear about it !
